Toddler evacuated from Gaza recovers from malnutrition in Italian hospital • FRANCE 24 English

This was Sham Ket just a few weeks ago on August 9th. She’s all skin and bones in the video shot by AP freelance journalist Mariam Daga who was later killed in an Israeli air strike on the hospital where Sham was being treated. The toddler though was one of the lucky ones. After a year of waiting, her medical evacuation requested by the WHO as part of the European civil protection mechanism was finally approved by Israel and she’s now being treated at a hospital in Naples, Italy. Just before arriving here, Sham’s situation was critical. She lost a lot of weight. She weighed around 4 kg. She was always tired and lying down on the mattress and hardly moving. Her mother explained that doctors in Gaza believed Sham was suffering from a rare genetic condition that was made worse by a lack of food, but they couldn’t test for it. Her doctor in Italy confirmed the diagnosis and says he’s happy with her progress so far. Shan’s clinical state was challenging when she arrived, especially because of nutrition problems, but also because of her underlying conditions, which is a form of metabolic disorder that interferes with the absorption of certain substances. We started to improve her condition with food and other nutrients such as vitamins. The 2-year-old, now alert, sits up in her bed, and continues to gain weight on a new diet that includes a special porridge. Sham is one of 181 Palestinian children being treated in Italy. According to the UN, nearly 12,000 children in Gaza under the age of five were suffering from acute malnutrition in July. Figures that are likely underestimated, according to the WH.
