In a 12-year period, Malta has made a radical change in civil rights to the extent that our country is at the top of rights for LGBTIQ+ people, the Labour Party said Saturday. For ten consecutive years, Malta is at the top of ILGA-Europe Rainbow Map, a testament to the legislative reforms and the commitment of a Labour Government that have made all this possible.

The change took place at a rapid pace after 2013, with the Labour Party in Government introducing groundbreaking laws such as equal marriage, legal gender recognition, prohibition of conversion practices and equal access to IVF and blood donation. Not only have these reforms placed Malta at the forefront, but we have also become a role model for other European countries, the PL said.

Progress was not possible without the work of organisations such as Malta LGBTIQ+ Rights Movement (MGRM), Allied Rainbow Communities, Drachma, Drachma Parents, and LGBTIQ+ Gozo as well as activists and parents who gave a voice to the community. The Pride in Malta and Gozo today gathers thousands of people, a reflection of a society that is becoming more open and inclusive.

At the same time, the Labour Party in Government continued to strengthen support services through the LGBTIQ+ Wellbeing service and with plans for a community centre in Valletta. These initiatives aim to provide a safe space and practical services for the community, the PL added.

Despite progress, challenges such as discrimination in everyday life remain. Therefore, Malta remains committed to continue investing in education, the fight against prejudice and the promotion of universal human rights.

Malta’s journey remains a testament to hope and courage: proof that with determined leadership and social activism, the country can change and improve people’s quality of life, the PL said.

For its part, the Nationalist Party said the Malta Pride 2025 is not only a celebration of love and identity, but also an opportunity to reflect on how far we’ve come as a nation and the work that still lies ahead.

The PN said it reaffirms its ongoing commitment to building a Malta where diversity is respected and inclusion is part of everyday life.

The Pn added will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with the LGBTQIA+ community in their journey towards greater dignity, equality and freedom because it believes that a stronger and fairer nation can only be built when every individual feels respected, valued and empowered to live authentically and without fear.

ADPD-The Green Party said Saturday it proudly stands as an ally of the rainbow communities in Malta and around the world. Our vision for the future of LGBTQI+ communities is rooted in Pillar 3 of our Green Vision 2050: “Beyond Individualism: Strengthening Community and Education.”

ADPD-The Green Party Chairperson Sandra Gauci said: “Beyond formal education, we also champion the importance of accessible, non-commercial community spaces. Public libraries, for example, should be well-resourced and inclusive, offering up-to-date literature and materials on LGBTQI+ topics that are appropriate for all ages. Community-led initiatives that foster dialogue and meaningful connection are equally vital to counter hate and division, and to promote a culture of respect and understanding.”
