In a statement, the GNR explained that the Coastal and Border Control Unit (UCCF) supported a sailboat on Monday that was in difficulty after suffering successive strikes on its bow caused by orcas.
The vessel was 10 nautical miles off Costa de Caparica, in the municipality of Almada, and when it was attacked, the crew called for help, expressing their intention to continue to the port of Cascais.
In response to the distress call, the CPV Bojador, a vessel on patrol, accompanied and provided the necessary support to the sailboat, ensuring safety throughout the journey.
On Saturday, a pod of orcas caused the sinking of a sailboat off the coast of Costa de Caparica. All crew members were rescued.
Also over the weekend, another maritime tourism vessel off Cascais Bay required assistance after an “orca interaction,” according to the National Maritime Authority.
According to the orcas.pt portal, more than 70 interactions between orcas and sailboats have been recorded this year.
Information from the Portuguese Navy and the Hydrographic Institute available online indicates that 50 navigational warnings have been issued this year due to orca encounters.
