King Charles has a plan in place to steer Donald Trump away from awkward conversations, a royal expert believes.
Charles and Trump have differing opinions on many topics, including climate change. Charles is passionate about the environment, while the U.S. President is keen on fossil fuels. That said, the monarch will steer away from any controversial topics with storytelling.
Pauline Maclaran, co-author of Royal Fever and Professor of Marketing and Consumer Research at Royal Holloway, spoke exclusively to Daily Express US about what to expect.
She said, “The chemistry between them will be very interesting but the King has met Trump on a previous state visit, so he will know what to expect and I’m confident he will handle the president very diplomatically.
“Charles is likely to steer the conversation in non-controversial directions and entertain the president with stories of his beekeeping, polo matches or hunting tales as diversionary tactics.”
In addition to clever anecdotes, Charles won’t be the only one entertaining the US President; he will be joined by other senior working royals who can help with the heavy lifting, including Queen Camilla, Prince William, and Princess Kate.
Trump seems to have a soft spot for William, talking about what a handsome fella he is. Following their meeting in Paris for the reopening of Notre Dame, the Prince of Wales reciprocated, saying he was happy to hear Trump’s tales about meeting with his grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth II.
It is well-known that Trump is smitten with the Royal Family.
Maclaren added, “Trump admires the Royal Family and seeks status through meeting them, so I’m sure they will play their role in ‘taming the beast’ as it were with the pomp and ceremony that will accompany his visit.”

With all eyes on the US President, possibly waiting for him to do something inappropriate, it is a chance for the Royal Family to show off their soft power and prove their importance to Great Britain and why they are needed.
“I think the Trump visit is important for King Charles and the Royal Family more broadly because it’s a chance to display their soft power skills and, in turn, the value or benefits they can offer Britain (which are questioned more and more in recent times).”
