A complex operation to safely destroy a wartime bomb was carried out yesterday, 15 September 2025, in the waters off the island of Palagruža.

According to the Split-Dalmatia Police Department, the explosive device – believed to date back to the Second World War – was discovered at a depth of around nine metres.

Police deployed special intervention and bomb disposal divers from Split to the site.

Following an initial inspection, experts determined that the bomb could not be removed safely, and the decision was made to destroy it on the spot.

At 15:15, the device was neutralised with a controlled underwater explosion. No damage or injuries were reported.

The operation was carried out by highly trained explosive ordnance disposal divers of the Split Special and Intervention Police Unit.
