• Members of the RUC and UDR were directly involved in sectarian murder, a British state review of the loyalist Glenanne Gang has confirmed.
Information about the activities of the gang has emerged during a series of family briefings recently carried out by senior officials from the Kenova investigation team, which oversees Operation Denton.
It was set up to carry out a review of the loyalist Glenanne Gang, which included members of the RUC, UDR and UVF.
The gang is reported to have been based at a farmyard owned by former RUC reservist James Mitchell at Glenanne in south Armagh.
The ruthless murder squad has been linked to the deaths of around 120 people across Mid Ulster and further afield.
A draft of the Operation Denton report has already been circulated to interested parties, with the final document, which some relatives have been told runs to around 400 pages, is due to be published in the coming weeks.
One of those who recently met with Operation Denton officials is Brendan Hayes, whose father John Hayes was killed when a bomb ripped through Dublin airport on November 29, 1975.
While the UDA initially claimed responsibility for the airport attack, Operation Denton officials have now told relatives the UVF was responsible.
During the recent meeting Mr Hayes was provided with fresh information about his father’s murder and the overall review.
The Irish News has seen a minute of the meeting between Mr Hayes and review staff.
As with other Kenova probes, Operation Denton had access to material not considered by previous investigations.
However, it is believed Denton officials have signaled a note of caution around this material, after information was previously held back by MI5.
It emerged last year the spy agency withheld information from Operation Kenova staff members investigating the activities of the British agent known as Stakeknife.
Cautious Kenova officials also revealed that as part of the wide-ranging review they have engaged with gardai, the Orange Order and campaign groups.
It is believed the final report will contain key findings, with each being case specific.
Information contained in the report is said to include details about intelligence and information received from agents, casual contacts, anonymous sources and other engagements with authorities.
According to Operation Denton officials, the majority of attacks carried out were sectarian, a view already held by many observers.
Investigators have said there was direct involvement by members of the security forces in some cases.
“Operation Denton have confirmed that in a number of cases there was direct involvement of the security forces,” the minute states.
“Paramilitary gangs like the UVF received information from the security forces – RUC, UDR and Territorial Army were also engaged with the UVF.
“There were members of the RUC and UDR who held extreme views and offered help to the UVF.
“This information was not acted upon by the authorities at the time or since.”
The Operation Denton team has not found any evidence of “government-level” involvement, however, it is suggested security force members were directly involved in murder.
“However, Operation Denton has not found anything that would suggest this case involved any government level knowledge or assistance and only found evidence of RUC and UDR involvement in cases – and in some cases members of these organisations were present at the scene of attack(s) and had direct involvement in murders and attacks,” the minute states.
Former members of the RUC and UDR, including to those linked to the Glenanne Gang, were convicted during the Troubles.
Operation Denton investigators said they had viewed UVF intelligence assessments dating to the origins of the organisation in 1966 through to the 1970s as part of the review.

Just a reminder that certain unionist politicians want criminals to investigate themselves

In other news bears shit in woods, pope has a funny hat.
News Headlines – Report tells people something they already know.
No shit.
The usual suspects will be on shortly to play the victim over their boys being confirmed as murderers.
Lads, I’m not entirely sure about this, but I think the Pope might be a Catholic.
Isn’t this like saying grass is green.
It would be nice if they named individuals and also those who knew what was going on and turned a blind eye.
We’ll never hear about the MI5 involvement but they could officially acknowledge ‘Sir’ Frank Kitson was a scumbag.
Imagine that!
4 legs good. 2 legs bad.
No fucking shit, sherlock.
Shocked, absolutely shocked
Ya don’t say…..!!!!..who could’ve guessed.
In other news, Grass is green, water is wet, and the Pope shits in the woods
This is obviously no surprise to anyone who has been paying attention. But what should be noted is that, as per the article I shared yesterday – [MI5 admit spying on journalists](https://www.reddit.com/r/northernireland/comments/1nhnfc6/mi5_admit_spying_on_journalist_vincent_kearney/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) the NIO, PSNI and MI5 are still actively (and illegally) going after anyone who dares to try and shed light on collusion.
i don’t know about you all but i am truly shocked at this news
The corruption with statutory services here is insane. Nothing short of a Nepalese revolution would sort it. Or a united Ireland.
It’s always the ones you least expect. And the ones you definitely expect.
Here’s another startling fact: members of the IRA, UDA, INLA and UVF were even more directly involved in sectarian murder. Some still are.
who’da thunk it
This will shock no one except the people who will [probably not even] read the report and say it’s all fake news and a witch hunt
Was at a festival recently and met 3 girls – 2 sisters and their cousin – both of their mothers and another aunt married UDR, they were catholics from the north.
2 of them were shocked when I TOLD them of the complicity. 1 agreed with me and told the other 2 that I was right.
This couldn’t be right. Willy Taser said it wasn’t true.
Shocked I tell thee
In other news, rain is wet.
‘Members’ … not everyone.
I’ve no doubt there were some absolute bastards in the forces back in the day and they should have been prosecuted for what they did. Hell they still should now
But there were also a hell of a lot of UDR and RUC who weren’t involved and they shouldn’t have their name dragged through the mud
No shit sherlock. The RUC were literally described by the head of the London met as a “paramilitary” force, not a police force. The RUC, udr, mrf, fru, etc were all disbanded for good reason considering the amount of terrorism, discrimination and other crimes that they were involved in.
Not susprised the oo were asked by the report considering they were involved in it as well.
The british government knew these collusion and terrorist crimes were happening and did absolutely nothing about it which is beyond horrific.
Yes, well known that a few were involved with terrorism same as any organisation there’s always a few bad apples. Some did time others got away with it unfortunately
Glennane was the only barracks not to be rebuilt when the ira blew it up….the British knew about this decades ago
they were still at it in 1997 with the sean brown killing
IRA killed 2000 people, news just in.
