  1. What are London’s values? Money? A cold pint after work? 😂

  2. > New figures from the Home Office show a rise of 50% in citizenship applications from Americans – putting it at the highest since records began. Between April and June, there were a record 2,194 applications, compared with 1,465 the previous year.

That’s quite the jump, even if absolute numbers aren’t massive.

  3. Or maybe they are doing it now before they bump the requirement to 10 years

  4. It’s less about London’s values and more about how much of a shit show the US is at the moment. Add into it the possibility IRL goes from 5 years to 10 years, yeah people are trying to get in sooner than later.

  5. I’m very happily living in London as a US immigrant to the UK. I’ve been here long enough that USA feels like a foreign country to me when I visit. Lived all over England and have only been made to feel unwelcome or uncomfortable about being an immigrant a very small number of times, though I know other immigrants may have very different experiences. London’s great diversity is fundamental to its identity – it’s got a pretty unique quality that, no matter where you’re standing, you can walk ~5 minutes in any direction and the street vibe will almost certainly have completely changed, both due to thousands of years of building and rebuilding and combining villages, and to its global cultural representation. I love it.

  6. Let’s see how the right reacts to this, im sure theyll be just as against white immigrants coming in!

  7. Think they’ll be disappointed when Reform win the next election.

  8. i see it. i relish the diversity in London having been born and raised here my friends are from all over the world I’ve tried so many cuisines my language consists of words I’ve learnt from different cultures. My opinions can be challenged and i’ve changed my mind on things just through meeting different people. It’s part of my lingua franca as a Londoner to appreciate the uniquely different cultures we have they have helped form my identity and I love it.

  9. I’m American and got my UK citizenship last month after living here for 8 years. There’s a few reasons that me and others have sought it out:

    * I originally came for grad school. Despite how expensive a master’s degree is in the UK compared to EU countries, it’s still a third of the price and half the time of a master’s in the US. Plus it’s obviously English speaking which is more challenging to find en mass in Europe.
    * Besides perhaps Switzerland, London still has the highest salaries and definitely the biggest job market in Europe. There’s so many global companies here that make is desirable for those who eventually want to do inter-company transfers, or just climb the corporate ladder.
    * Despite the HCOL, London is still cheaper than the major US cities even when salaries are taken into account. Having moved from San Francisco, I found London much cheaper (particularly for rent). Though we all know that wages haven’t kept up with inflation in recent years so the gap has lessened.
    * UK bureaucracy is fairly simple and streamlined compared to many countries. I’ve also lived in France where EVERYTHING public sector related is done by paper or in person and it’s mostly the same in the US. GOVUK is one of the best digital government platforms in the world.
    * Having paid thousands in visas and healthcare surcharges (while also paying normal NI contributions and taxes), many immigrants want the stability and benefits that come with citizenship. At least I can vote now.
    * I didn’t move for politics but it’s one of the reasons I’ve stayed. As bad as the UK has gotten with it’s own brand of xenophobia and extremism, it’s child’s play compared to what’s happening in the US.
    * London really is an amazing city. After nearly a decade here, it’s become home and there’s no other city I’d rather be at the moment.

  10. American living in London here. Moved here from the US in 2017. I have ILR now and am going to apply for citizenship this year, probably this month.

I lived in several cities in the US before moving here. I really love London. It’s a great city. My partner and I have made lots of good friends here, some of whom we’d consider family now. It’s expensive, but before moving here we were living in LA which is also very expensive. I understand why people, not just Americans, would want to move here.

My job allows me to meet and develop relationships with all sorts of different people and communities in London. I feel really lucky for that. London, for the most part, is a very open and tolerant place. I think that’s great and I think it’s good for everyone who makes their home here.

I just wish there as more ice hockey. If anyone has any pull, can you get the Pittsburgh Penguins to come play a game here? I’d settle for the Steelers.

  11. Where are they going to go after the UK becomes more like Trump’s America jr?

  12. Obviously, they will need to be rich in order to London.
Coming from America, they won’t be getting a free house.

  13. Record numbers of Americans seeking UK citizenship because of Donnie
