AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – On Monday, family and well-wishers gathered for a memorial service to honor a Korean War veteran about seven decades after he went missing.
Back in August, one family was notified of a loved one’s remains being identified some 75 years after going missing in Korea.
Sgt. Ray Johnson was deployed to Korea in 1950. The day after arriving, he went missing in action.
“Mother and daddy had a telegram they delivered to the door that said he was missing,” said Treva Mann, 97-year-old resident.
Sgt. Johnson’s remains arrived in Amarillo Friday morning.
For the family, it’s a chapter in a story they didn’t know would ever be written.
The service was followed by burial at Llano Cemetery with full military honors.
The events have brought a welcome and unexpected closure for family members.
“It was always that mother had a brother that was lost in the Korean War. We don’t know what happened to him. Now we do. We know what happened to him, and we’re bringing him home,” said Martha Labus, Treva Mann’s daughter.
