The European Union is actively working with Moldova to prevent possible Russian interference in social networks during elections and to ensure voting transparency. Such remarks were made during a briefing by European Commission spokesperson Toma Renye.
“We are working very closely with Moldova, particularly in the area of social networks. We share best practices and experience to protect elections, their integrity, and to give users the opportunity to make free and well-informed decisions before voting.”
– Toma Renye, spokesperson for the European Commission
Concerns about campaign repetition and the Moldovan government’s response
The European Union underscores the need for enhanced digital security and a rapid response to any attempts to manipulate information during parliamentary elections. Moldova is working on increasing transparency of online debates and ensuring fair voting.
According to experts and local officials, Russia may use disinformation and provocative materials to influence Moldovan voters abroad, with the aim of pressuring the electoral process and its outcomes.
“Russia is preparing for an ‘unprecedented interference’ in the country’s parliamentary elections.”
– Maia Sandu, President of Moldova
According to the president’s national security adviser Stanislav Sekrieru, Moscow is intensifying attempts to influence Moldovan citizens living abroad, in particular through reviving the pro-Kremlin network “Matryoshka” with the aim of creating fake media and spreading false messages ahead of elections.
On August 15, 2025, Maia Sandu stated that the Moldovan diaspora is experiencing unprecedented pressure from hostile forces ahead of the parliamentary elections. She urged citizens abroad to stay vigilant, unite around shared values, defend sovereignty, democracy, freedom, and the European choice.
The European Union continues to support Moldova in creating a stable and secure digital environment that allows citizens to make informed decisions when voting and reduces the influence of external forces on the electoral process.
