I just moved here to study but I’m from another European country.
What do you think about the city and about this part of Belgium in general?

  1. Beautiful architecture in the hills behind the train station, but poverty stricken because of mine closures and mismanaged, especially decisions like that hideous Calatrava train station. Les Ardentes is nice.

  2. I was born there. And I’m happy my parents left quickly. I find the city itself ugly and the mindset is « different ». For the best or the worst.

You will make friends or be all alone. Nothing in between

  3. A bit better since the tramway construction sites are over; but still filled with junkies and/or beggars (why not both?), also, watch out for the pickpockets, especially if you’re tipsy.

There’s good places and really trashy ones.

In the end, still glad I moved to the countryside.

  4. I like Liege, I’ve never spent much time there, but I’ve always found it had a bit of character, and some interesting buildings. The train station is pretty special if (like me) you’re into modern architecture. Some other, older buildings are either abandoned or in poor repair

  5. Far removed from my part of French-speaking Belgium, never really spent time there. It’s a very isolated city when you live in the centre of the country.

  6. I turned up during fresher’s week once…that was … interesting.

  7. I live nearby and did my studies there. 0 desire of ever going again. I don’t like cities in general and Liege is not a nice one.

  8. I like that they got the trams back since April this year.

  9. I lived there with a lot of good memories, a city with a village feel.

    Great nightlife also!

  10. Great city. Always something going on. Really nice and kind people

  11. Hm. Liege. I live. One chamber of the beating heart of the trillion, Maastricht being another. Great concerts, theater.

The Pinkertons chased Adam worth here, the man who was the real life napoleon of crime and on whom sir Arthur Conan Doyle based professor Moriarty on. These streets influenced George Simenon to write maigret.

  12. I actually had a couple of dates in Liège with a Walloon girl in the last two weeks and I really liked the vibe in the city centre.

  13. I like it but i wouldnt want to live there, just visit every so often

  14. I like the architecture of some buildings, the river, the fact that the university is large, many restaurants and bars seem very interesting, I like that it’s different from where I’m from (Northern Italy), I like that the rent is relatively cheap, you can walk pretty much anywhere, I like that’s close to many other countries, it’s relatively close to SPA (F1).

The thing that I don’t like is that’s full of drug addicts and homeless people even in the center, it’s much worse than any city I’ve ever seen from that perspective. Also it seems they don’t take full advantage of the fact that they have a beautiful river, they should have more bars and nice places to hang out there, if they exist I haven’t seen them yet.

  15. I love it. But I don’t live there. As a cyclist I love the tons of unknown steep bad mantained roads. It is far from a safe or ordinary experience but once struggling uphill between the messed up pieces of tarmac its quite and experience. Traffic wise its a mess.

  16. Live and Antwerp (insert parking joke) and I fucking love Liege. The country side around it, sure, but also the gritty city. The nearness of the Meuse everywhere, the new tram, the quartier latin, it’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen.

  17. I have family there. I like it, but it can be very gritty and gloomy.

  18. Well, it’s close to Maastricht and has a cool train station. It’s gritty though.

  19. I visited it for the first time this year. I think you can see that it used to be a prosperous jewel and has been through some tougher times. But it also exudes some young creative energy that wants to make something of itself again. And that’s very stimulating.

Also, the wide boulevards give it the allure of a nation’s capital. Almost like it was that in a parallel universe Liege and not Brussels was Belgium’s capital.

    I can highly recommend.

  20. I just rode through it today to work and back on Vespa 50cc . 🙂

Lived from November 2023 to August 2025 at its suburb,  Boncelles.

Liege itself has postindustrial charme with Wallonia been slightly trushy in appearance,  in general.

Airbnb owner told me, in Wallonia they don’t have pride of ownership compared to Flanders.
But in Wallonia decoy blends with nature.

I rode on bicycle in Liege,  walked several times. Also drove in car.
As walker and street photog I find it interesting.

I have big respect for Leige health care.

It has good connections to Germany,  Netherlands, Brussels and not a problem to get to Paris or seashore of Belgium.  By train.

    Traffic is mostly light.
Cycling is bit too adventurous  compared to nearby Maastricht.
Hills are insane,  but it is why Liege is not Maastricht as well.

Where are some ghettos in Liege,  but nothing bad, just different.

If someone will be able to speak English with you in Liege,  they are most likely not with local origins.

Since it is politically on the left side, not alike people are accepted.
Local radio stations are in different languages.

Great by its size Sunday market.
And Christmas market is not one, but two. With church running services and open to everyone.
It was very supportive while I was alone.

Several of my colleagues who are also new here are living in Liege.
It is affordable on rent and to buy.

I choose not to, I’m not a French speaker or city dweller.

  21. last time i went everything was in roadworks, even their famous stairs was halfly open roadwork.

Was a decent restaurant not far from a basketbal park though, shame they tend to forget their customers in the basement…

  22. Liège is the first real Walloonian city I’ve been to after moving to Belgium. This was my first realization that the level of neglect and chaos in Walloonian cities is of biblical proportions compared to France.

  23. A friend got his bike stolen in Antwerp, he found it in 2dehands in Liege. He pretended to be a buyer. Together with some friends we went to Liege by train (the Antwerp Police didn’t want to collaborate even with a report of the robbery, we had to do it all ourselves). The police in Liege were the nicest i have met. They put us into the undercover cops car, made some jokes with us (we speak very little french), arrested the thief/seller, and we got the bike back. Nice people!!! Also the ardennes are so close to go biking 🚲

  24. I live near liège it’s a beautiful city

    But tooo much old house’s

  25. Living in the slow, charming and boring city Namur, I really love Liege.

It’s a really dynamic place with a real chaotic charm and a lot of hidden gems.

  26. I studied there, I like this city. It’s been transforming rapidly these past few years.

  27. Lived there for 12 years +-, always found it disgusting and not safe at all.

  28. It has a particular charm. But it is a city only a mother can love.

  29. A lot of interesting buildings if you walk around looking up! But they are fairly scattered.

  30. I was just visiting Liege a few days ago. It was my least liked city I visited in Belgium. I called it the Paris of Belgium. It’s dirtier than the other cities I visited. It was like Paris where you can smell urine in the streets. I visited the Sunday market and witnessed a fist fight among several guys. Also I noticed a huge presence of police with rifles, while being stationed in Ghent, I never even saw police on foot patrolling. I felt safe in Ghent but I didn’t in Liege. That’s just my opinion though.

  31. Haven’t been in a long time, but as I remember it: a place that defies expectations. It’s a gritty city with some hard edges to it, yet at the same time feels alive and vibrant with really nice people.

  32. Live close by, love it for a day. Good vibe, social and accepting people, some real fun places and excellent restaurants. And that tram is a blessing

  33. ghetto. nice people and beautiful surroundings in summer with good weather.
