MINSK, 18 September (BelTA) – Europe has lost its central place in the global economy, becoming a peripheral player, the Polish politician, political analyst Mateusz Piskorski said in a new episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.

The Poland’s border closure with Belarus could force Asian countries to find other supply routes to Europe, potentially utilizing sea corridors. Since 2022, the EU has lost its strong position on the economic stage, the political analyst noted. “The EU is not a subject of geo-economic and geopolitical relations in the world. Especially since 2022, Europe has turned into a periphery of the global economy. We see it, we observe it every day, we look at the economic indicators of Germany and other countries that were once Europe’s powerhouses. We are undoubtedly a periphery now. Naturally, if you look at all this globally, at the current geopolitical confrontation, this conflict, this escalation of the global situation that we have been observing since February 2022, it practically indicates that the United States has managed to implement the plans it voiced back in 1992,” the Polish political analyst said.

He recalled that at that time, following the collapse of the USSR, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz considered Europe the main threat to the development of the United States. The European Union was created that same year, and even then the USA saw Europe as their main competitor. “Europe has been destroyed over the past 30 years. It has lost geopolitically. In the new world (I think this is well understood in Belarus) Europe is not an independent player, it is not a player at all. The players are the representatives of the Global South countries. And, of course, the USA. And, naturally, Russia, Belarus’ closest partner and ally. Therefore, I am not surprised that in Minsk, having certain knowledge about what is happening in world politics, they made the decision long ago to strengthen relations with countries such as China, India, Iran, and so on. In Belarus, they understand that the world is currently undergoing a deepest transformation. In Poland, no one has understood this yet. When the moment comes that Warsaw understands the new conditions of international relations, the world order, then perhaps this policy will change. And the second option: if we do not understand it ourselves, a call might come from Washington, and one of the American friends will say: ‘Listen, that is enough. We showed that we can block this route from China, but now that is it, no more need, open the borders.’ A call might come from other capitals as well. Certain external pressure might be exerted on the leadership of Poland,” he noted.

Mateusz Piskorski added that he had hoped for a change in the decision of the Polish authorities after the visit of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, but even after the completion of the Belarusian-Russian military exercise Zapad 2025, the situation at the border remained unchanged.
