MONROE, La. (KNOE) – On Sept. 19, 1881, the 20th president of the United States died while in office.
James A. Garfield had only been in office for four months.
On July 2 of that same year, Garfield was shot twice while waiting for a train in the Washington D.C. Railroad Station.
The president lay ill for 80 days before he died.
Vice President Chester Arthur then took the Oath of Office.
