Names containing 'eigh', and births with them, peaked in 2019 and have declined 17% and 31% respectively since then according to the Social Security Administration's baby name data.   5. Okay, that is an awesome website. Thanks to the bored quant that made it for fun. It is very slick.

    I also looked into the ‘Aiden’ names (Kayden, Aiden, Graydon and so on) since those have been insanely popular. We are also well past peak Aiden’s, which is for the best. Aiden names hit over 4.5% of all US births several years ago and are now at about 3% and falling fast. The Ayden Kayden Brayden Okayden trend seems to be slowly falling off.

  7. Kids still have awesomely crazy names these days, or odd spellings of more traditional names.

    Or they have the names of 1940’s bankers or lady riveters.

  8. Really we’re now approaching the peak as our day to day perception of the prevalence of those names is only going to increase as they enter into the workforce in 18-25 years.

  10. We need a return to proper names, so that when people become adults, they sound like adults. Kyleigh Stevenson is an 8-year old kid forever. Balthazar Ezekiel Murderhound, on the other hand, probably had a full beard at birth. Balthazar owns land with stables, Kyleigh doesn’t have a job.

  19. As someone who does hospital data entry, let me tell ya, the new names aren’t any better.

  20. I think this could be deceiving and we could potentially be still peaking. We should instead plot the % of US births that are eighs since the birth rate is declining. Births might be down but we might still be going up!
