LJUBLJANA — Many of us have played volleyball on sand, grass or a wooden court. Each surface has its unique advantages. I’ll always prefer sand because it provides the perfect balance of support and cushioning.
But have you ever played in water?
I’m not joking. There’s a tournament held in the Slovenian city of Ljubljana where participants play on a platform floating in the river. The platform is about four and a half inches underwater, so there’s plenty of splashing and sloshing involved. Check out this video to see what the International Volleyball on Water Tournament looks like.
Thanks to the pulsing LED lights and throngs of fans, this tournament looks out of this world — definitely different from the lawn games that most of us play at the park on summer afternoons. Not only do you have to be a good volleyball player, but you also have to be a good swimmer if you want to be able to quickly get back onto the platform after a diving save.
Anyhow, this new form of volleyball is reason No. 253 that Slovenia is one of the coolest countries on earth. From bears to honey to alpine lakes, it’s among the most amazing places I’ve ever visited.
