Poland and Sweden launch joint exercises in the Baltic Sea. What exactly Is SNEX Gotland Sentry?
The first results of the latest Polish-Swedish defense agreement are beginning to take shape. Thanks to a letter of intent signed on September 2 in Kielce by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and Swedish Minister of Defence Pål Jonson, both countries committed to joint operations in the Baltic Sea—and that commitment is now materializing.
The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces, together with the Swedish Joint Forces Command, has launched the first-ever bilateral SNEX-type exercise under the codename GOSE – Gotland Sentry.
What is SNEX (Short Notice Exercise)? According to the Operational Command, it is an exercise characterized by a very short notice period for the forces involved. Its purpose is to test the ability to carry out assigned tasks within a mandated timeframe. The objective of GOSE is also to “demonstrate the capability of the Polish and Swedish armed forces to rapidly deploy designated components by air, sea, and land, as well as to refine collective defense procedures.”
“The nature of SNEX means there is no long planning phase, operations are highly dynamic, and the emphasis is placed on command flexibility and interoperability. It is one of the most demanding forms of military training, verifying actual combat readiness,” the Command emphasized.
