New York-style Chinese American restaurant Genghis Cohen, a Los Angeles icon, is set to reopen for dine-in service soon in a new temporary home. The restaurant closed its original Fairfax location on May 31 after owners Marc Rose and Med Abrous were unable to secure a new long-term lease for the space that would be financially feasible. The restaurant will open in its new location just down the street at 448 N. Fairfax Avenue on Thursday, September 25, while continuing to look for a permanent space to eventually settle into.
Rose and Abrous preserve the spirit of Genghis Cohen at the new location with the original red booths and paper lanterns overhead. The fish tank has even moved in, where it now overlooks a 12-seat bar. Like its former location, the tables will feature lazy Susans to make dining with a group easier.
Favorites like kung pao shrimp, orange peel chicken, and chow fun remain on the menu, alongside new dishes like five-spice marinated and glazed Volcano Chicken and shrimp and chive dumplings. A new late-night menu available at the expanded bar will offer Szechuan chicken sliders, barbecue pork bao buns, crab rangoons, and more. Expect cocktails like the Zombie Cohen with rum and passionfruit, the Dole Whip-style Dole Survivor, and the large-format Forbidden Sands with vodka and hibiscus.
Beginning September 25, Genghis Cohen will operate from Monday to Thursday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Friday from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m., Saturday from noon to 2 a.m., and Sunday from noon to 10 p.m. On Friday and Saturday, the full kitchen closes at midnight, but the bar menu is available until 2 a.m. And yes, Genghis Cohen will be open for Christmas dinner. Reservations are now available on OpenTable.
Local Los Angeles pizza chain Prime Pizza just announced a major expansion. In addition to the planned new locations in Mission Viejo and Brea this year, as well as Northridge and Torrance next year, the restaurant will open in Thousand Oaks, Valley Village, Riverside, and Rancho Cucamonga in 2026. Prime Pizza first debuted in 2017 in Fairfax, serving New York-style pies. Currently, it has eight locations in Little Tokyo, Woodland Hills, West LA, and more.
Alex Suzuki, formerly of Arts District restaurant Kodo, has joined Rokusho as its new executive chef. Suzuki, who was raised in Los Angeles but trained in Japan, introduced new dishes like a yaki zarandeado marinated in white miso and yuzu as well as a sweet shrimp and scallop tartare served with toasted milk bread.
