Western powers recognise Palestinian state, drawing Israeli fury • FRANCE 24 English

So he called the decisions absurd, saying no Palestinian state will ever be established and that doing so would endanger Israel’s existence. Benamin Netanyahu even going on to pledge to expand Jewish settlements in the West Bank in response. His reaction then after Britain, Australia, Canada, and Portugal recognized the state of Palestine. A series of other countries including France set to follow this week at the UN General Assembly, which opens in New York later. Threearters of UN members now recognize the state of Palestine. Well, we’re going to cross live then to Jerusalem, speak to our correspondent, Ngatanolski, who joins us from there. Noga, some pretty strong words from Benjamin Netanyahu. But how are these decisions going down more generally there in Israel? Well, yes, Netanyahu’s message with strong words and I have to say shocking some shocking responses from Netanyahu’s proxies. um uh his his crony who is the political appointee and the Israeli ambassador to the United States, Ambassador Lighter tweeted apparently with the ascent of the prime minister comparing British Prime Minister Kier Starmer to Neville Chamberlain saying he has made new he has made new alliances with the new Nazis nothing less than that. So the responses in Israel have been quite extreme but not necessarily among the Israeli citizens who I think are much more confused than insensed by what’s happening. I my sense is that the average Israeli definitely feels that these decisions to recognize a Palestinian state are not decisions uh in Israel’s favor, but are very unclear on how this may actually impact Israel. And Israelis, regular Israelis, Israelis in the, you know, shopping today ahead of the Jewish New Year are much more concerned still about the fate of the hostages and about the continuation of this war that continues taking the lives of conscripted soldiers. So, the 18year-olds of everyone around uh every single day. And that is what I think it continues to concern Israelis in a situation in which the gap between the Israeli government and the Israeli people continues just to widen. So Nola, can Israel therefore do you think weather the storm? I mean traditional allies here expressing more and more sympathy though for the Palestinians. Yes. I mean, sympathy for the Palestinians has been growing for a while. Um, I think after hitting a kind of a nadier after October 7th, though, this was always also um a bit detached from your average Palestinian who had nothing to do with the terror attacks of October 7th. This was the work of Hamas and a terrorist group. Nonetheless, I think uh certainly in the past year, year and a half, sympathy for Palestinians has been ascendant and Prime Minister Netanyahu appears to have taken the extremely risky decision risky for his nation um to simply separate Israel from the rest of the world. To have Israel, a small country of just 10 million people uh in a very dangerous neighborhood to have his country go it alone. He gave a remarkable dark speech just a few days ago in which he described that the world is being divided into two blocks and that Israel belongs to neither. He told Israelis we’ll have to go it alone that the economy will have to turn inwards into a closed market utarchy. It was a very extreme speech. It crashed the Israeli markets and that speech even a number of days later continues to cast a pole over most Israelis. That speech, I think, as least as much as these decisions uh across the ocean to recognize a Palestinian state have really cast a dark cloud over Israelis. No, thanks very much. Tanapolski our correspondent joining us live there from Jerusalem.

Britain, Australia, Canada and Portugal recognised Palestine on Sunday, a historic shift in Western policy that angered Israel. Palestinians in Gaza hailed it as a victory, while Netanyahu vowed a Palestinian state would never exist. FRANCE 24’s Noga Tarnopolsky has more from Jerusalem.

  3. Hahahaha western leaders trying to save themselves. They are responsible for the killing and murder of Muslims for the last 250 years. Time has come for Muslims to make u people suffer.

  4. I find it deeply concerning that a state is moving to annihilate and conquer territories while historic powers like the United Kingdom or France look the other way. If we allow it to accumulate power and land unchecked, sooner or later it will become unstoppable and we will all pay a heavy price. We all remember the one who claimed he needed "living space" (Lebensraum).

  5. Israel should Annex the while out, the opposition in Australia when it gets into government again has already agreed to reverse recognition. Love from Australia
