6 in 10 Canadians say they can never trust Americans the same way again

  1. The trouble with the Western world’s relationship with America is that it was built on a set of assumptions that were dependent on gentleman’s agreements, and which weren’t actually that difficult for a non-globalist Presiden to overturn if they wanted to.

Canada was always vulnerable to this kind of coercion by the United States. It just never thought the US would be this hostile. Neither did most American allies.

And they’re still not prepared to deal with it, despite Trump’s policies becoming increasingly normalised in the Republican party to the extent that future Republican Presidents will surely try to emulate them. Trump isn’t an aberration. He’s increasingly looking like the new normal.

  2. US citizen here. I’ll never look at or trust my friends, neighbors, students, and colleagues again the same way either. I’ve always maintained a degree of adolescent “everyone’s dumb” mentality, but now I can quantify vote the number and degree of it. According to a normal distribution curve, about 30% of people (in a random population) will fall to the evil, degenerate, or completely ambivalent side of 2 standard deviations. So whatever their actual morals, almost a third of the US will almost guaranteed elect the worst option given a choice. They’ll also do nothing if faced with evidence they made the wrong choice. And I’m glad I don’t look Span-ish, or they’d apparently report me to ICE.

Note: Yes, the 30% could apply to intelligence (or strength, or wealth, etc) but that’s not the point. Plenty of successful, educated and/or intelligent people supported this situation too. (Unfortunately?) It’s *not* just a case of one side being stupid.

  3. This is /r/geopolitics. There are no friends or enemies, just pursued interests.

All these stories are intentionally divisive, anthropomorphic folk tales designed to create conflict.

Breaking news: nation states pursue geopolitical goals

  4. Americans love Canadians, we aren’t trump. It will pass.

I bought two made in Canada coats last week to support our neighbors to the north.

I’m sorry our president is an idiot.

  5. 2 honest questions:

    1) what does Canada do for the US beyond being a friendly neighbor? A bit of trade? Some funny comedians? Constant lectures? They’ve pulled away from the US in their politics as much as the other way around.

    2) what specific policies has the US enacted (put into practice/acted on/changed) that are so detrimental to the relationship?

This is geopolitics, not TruthSocial. And this is made up polling commissioned by a low-grade website. It’s divisive and useless for policy purposes.

  6. I’ve been to the states at least a dozen times, yet I’m pretty sure I’ll never go there again. My children will not be allowed until they are adults. I now view “made in china” as far better than “product of usa”.

These opinions would have sounded absurd to me a year ago.

  7. All Americans?  That’s a silly thing to do.
