World Cycling Championships in Rwanda: Discovering the toughest course in the competition’s history

We’re going to do the shorter 15 km world champs route this morning just to get a little taste of what the pros are going to be doing when they’re here. This course is being described as the toughest in the history of the competition. We climb up the horrible nasty thing. Yeah. And then over the top and then I’m lost. All right. After a quick briefing, the group sets off. Giggali’s rolling hills are stunning to look at, but brutal on the legs. That was tough. The men’s elite race will feature two particularly grueling challenges. The ascent of the Gulf and the punishing cobblestone climb of Kinura. It keeps going and going. I’m definitely feeling warm. It’s I mean a spicy climb. I haven’t done actually the full cobblestone road before until this morning and it’s tough. On race day, riders will take on the circuit 15 times. Coming up at one time, I’m like I think it’s enough. Yeah, there’s everything from a nice gentle climb. We’re going to go on a nice gentle climb now to the classic uh just wall uh anything that a cyclist wants. During the competition, riders will cover 267 kilometers in total. Finishing at Kegali’s Convention Center, the city’s iconic law. Once off the bikes, it’s time to take stock. I was like, this is going to be a nice fun chill ride. Um, and I’m a little toasted. The verdict is unanimous. This is made for champions. Impressive. We’ll be out there. watch it for sure. Yeah, the cycling fans won’t miss a second of it.

The Rwandan capital Kigali will from Sunday some of the biggest names in cycling, including the men’s and women’s Tour de France winners, for the first staging in Africa of the UCI Road World Championships. France24 teams has been getting a tour from the American cyclist Megan Geddis, who owns “Tugende” bike café in Kigali.
