[Dunwich](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunwich), a small village on the Suffolk coast, was once a thriving medieval port and one of the largest towns in England. Beginning in the 13th century, powerful storms and relentless coastal erosion caused much of the town to collapse into the North Sea.
Is the beach crown owned? A responsible detectorist could probably find a lot of interesting stuff here and accurately record everything. I’d be tempted to make the trip there myself if it was allowed.
“Dear Diary, this year of our Lord 1903 sees me finally begin work restoring this historic church on the Suffolk coast. It shall soon be fully rebuilt to its former glory.”

It featured on the YouTube channel historia civilis recently.
Until 1832 Dunwich elected two MPs to the house of commons, despite the sea destroying the port and swallowing up much of the town many years before, leaving only a tiny village.
It was one of the most notorious of the ‘rotten boroughs’ when it was abolished by the Great Reform Act.
In school they made us sing from the bible “The wise man builds his house upon the rocks”. Anyone else have similar memories?
Also see Leiston Abbey, which was moved 2 miles inland in the 14th century as it was being inundated nearby.
That’s hauntingly beautiful.
Dunwich Horror FTW
Its the fish people that did it.
Yes I know its a different Dunwich but it fits nicely
All that is left from one of the biggest cities in England at one time.
If anyone gets a chance to visit there’s an excellent chip shop in Dunwich, at least there was the last time I visited a number of years ago.
The Dunwich Dynamo gets a little easier with each passing year.
You all need to go and listen to The Lovecraft Investigations. True-crime style podcast, but the mysteries are Lovecraft plots. Best audio drama I’ve ever listened to. Series 2 has a lot going on in this Dunwich!!
Not too clever in olden times, they didn’t understand errosion of land…

Just watched a Time Team dig near this location. Very interesting. Nature is powerful.

Was it lost to the sea? Or did an eldritch beast destroy it?
The horror!
It’s quite sad to see something from history being lost this way. But thats nature for you.

If you’re ever in the area, there is a little museum in Dunwich that tells its history. It is well worth a visit.
With their very own Bishop too.
Similar story at Happisburgh as well as other locations I’ve been watching them slowly dissappear over the years
Looks very antediluvian.
I’ve been on holiday here! You can combine it with a trip to RSPB Minsmere.
