UK is ready to shoot down Russian jets as Trump emboldens Europe

   The warning came amid increasing tensions over Nato’s eastern flank due to repeated incursions by Russia of drones and fighter jets over Polish, Estonian and [Danish skies](https://inews.co.uk/news/world/copenhagen-airport-shut-after-large-drone-sightings-3932864?srsltid=AfmBOorga-ZdK48mVUJ574arcOewKpfVNW9bIdvDZ2hEcpGyzAbborME&ico=in-line_link) in the past two weeks.

   It followed [remarks by Donald Trump](https://inews.co.uk/news/trump-says-yes-to-shooting-down-russian-jets-in-nato-airspace-in-zelensky-meeting-3935064?ico=in-line_link) on Tuesday, when he said Russian jets intruding into Nato airspace should be shot down – echoing a warning by Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk who said his country would do the same “without discussion”.

   Ambassador Neil Holland, the head of the UK delegation to the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), said on Wednesday that Moscow needed to officially answer why it had made these repeated violations and what its intentions were.

   In a speech in Vienna to the OSCE, Holland said: “Russia should be in no doubt that Nato and allies will employ all necessary military and non-military tools, in accordance with international law, to defend ourselves and deter all threats in a manner, timing and domain of our choosing.”

   At the weekend RAF Typhoon fighter jets [began a new mission](https://inews.co.uk/news/british-fighter-jets-patrol-skies-over-poland-after-russian-drone-incursion-3929980?srsltid=AfmBOoqiv7Dfx7mJ7ftsqMgi3csjL6u5fV_zoLNULbhKCj8_qaIk7Zza&ico=in-line_link) to patrol the airspace over Poland, codenamed Eastern Sentry, to bolster support for Nato’s defence of Eastern European countries.

   Last week [three Russian MiG-31 fighter aircraft strayed into Estonian airspace for 12 minutes](https://inews.co.uk/news/politics/putins-threat-europe-growing-russian-fighter-jets-violate-nato-airspace-3929240?ico=in-line_link) – in what was seen as a deliberate provocation – before being escorted out by Nato planes.

   It followed a [series of drones intruding into Poland](https://inews.co.uk/news/russian-drones-shot-down-poland-europe-open-conflict-3909352?srsltid=AfmBOoqspj7cEVrCwlmeoqgMOMv0cI1yjtbTJTCV8XQs1uwyAJU2OYdU&ico=in-line_link), which were shot down.

   On Monday a number of drones were spotted near Copenhagen airport, forcing the airport to shut for several hours.

   They were suspected of being Russian drones and, if confirmed, the incursion into Denmark would be the furthest west its aircraft have strayed during the current wave of incidents.

    Its not that unusual. My Dad used to be in the RAF based in Cyprus (this is going back to when National Service was a thing) and occasionally RAF jets from Akrotiri would do the same thing to them and head to Russia before veering off. Its to test response time, alertness and often jn high stress situations pilots / ground crew make mistakes ie forget to use codewords etc which is useful.
