Spain Park moves to 4-0 in area with sweep of Pelham

HOOVER – The Spain Park Jaguars moved one step closer to a regular-season area title with another strong effort at home against a county foe.

Spain Park swept the Pelham Panthers 3-0 on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at Jag Arena in Class 6A, Area 8 action.

With the win, the Jags moved to 4-0 in area play. They can clinch hosting rights to the area tournament and the No. 1 seed with a win on Thursday, Sept. 25 against the Helena Huskies.

Spain Park started off the match in solid fashion with a quick start in the first set. The Jags took control early on and got a double-digit lead that they parlayed into a first-set win.

Spain Park won the first set in 25-14 fashion to grab a 1-0 lead in the match.

Pelham fought back in the second set and made it a much closer affair. The Panthers were within striking distance in the final stretch, but the Jags finished off the set victorious.

Spain Park’s 25-20 second-set win brought it one step closer to ending the match with a 2-0 lead.

From there, the Jags turned on the jets and took another big lead in the third set, channeling their first set form en route to closing out the victory.

Spain Park earned the 3-0 sweep win courtesy of its 25-15 victory in the third set.

Bea Wiggins and Peyton Harrington both got over double figures in the match with Wiggins earning 12 kills and Harrington securing 10 kills. Ja’niyah Mosley and Chloe Shumate each finished with five kills apiece. As a result, setter Cailyn Kyes secured 33 assists.

Harrington led the way on the service line with four aces, and senior Mary Payton Dees finished with three aces.

Over on defense, Camdyn Kyes led the team in digs with 11 from the libero spot. Wiggins and Harrington had 10 apiece to secured double-doubles on the night. Dees earned six digs, and Madden Scott had three digs.

As for blocks, Shumate was part of three of the team’s four blocks, with two solo blocks included as well.

For Pelham, Aubrie Smith led the way with 10 kills and six digs while Nyssa Wynn had five kills. Bristol Hannah finished with 19 assists and seven digs, Lilia Couture earned five digs and Kayla Girardin had four digs in the match.

Spain Park improved to 24-5 overall with the win in addition to its 4-0 area mark. The Jags’ next match against Helena will start at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 25 at Jag Arena.

Pelham will also be in area action on the same night at home against the Chelsea Hornets at 6 p.m. The Panthers will look to improve on their 10-17 record and 0-2 area mark in their next match.
