Only seen it this evening. Is this because the card makes you a Brit?

  1. Yay. I can’t wait to have my mandated personal details leaked.

  2. It can also be perceived as an attack on the rights of British citizens in the north of Ireland, but of course Michelle doesn’t give a toss about them.

  3. Do people not realise it will end up being for anyone legally resident in the UK….like non British people included? And that most EU countries have an equivalent?

  4. What a stupid idea, passport, national insurance number, tax code, p45, surely this is already covered and how much will it cost?

  5. And here we have another coalition of numties. On the one hand Shinners get offended by the name, on the other right-wing nutjob, because “iDs ArE cOMmUnIsM”

Welcome to the world’s biggest funny farm

  6. Only 482 quid to renounce your British citizenship lads

  7. I wonder what consulting firm is cracking open the champagne tonight?

  8. Sinners sold out Ireland years ago. They class Irish citizens as far right extremists, a bit rich

  9. Digital ID is about control of the masses.

After digital ID comes digital currency.

After digital currency comes controls over your purchases.

After control of your purchasing, comes debanking.

    After debanking comes poverty.

  10. As someone who has had a digital ID for around ten years now (Iceland) I cannot emphasise how much easier it makes daily life. Iceland went from being a country where no one had a national ID card (passports and driving licenses were the norm) but that obviously has its own problems, mainly having to carry the physical ID and/or people having neither.

The digital ID brought Iceland into line with the other Nordic countries and honestly, it’s a game changer. I can get same day access to govt documents and services, apply for loans, bank accounts, credit cards and access the national health service portal and its myriad services without leaving the home. If I want to change my internet service provider or insurance, it takes seconds. They basically ping my phone and I confirm on my end. All they see is that I am who I say I am, nothing more.

I get the fears of a digital national ID scheme but it is the norm in the Nordics and I can’t imagine going back. I’m not exactly sold on the proposed name of BritCard mind you, here it’s literally called Digital ID, nothing else. The portal is called Digital Iceland or island.is to locals.

  11. Yeah I see the uk going down the papers please route anyone else

  12. Digital Identity and Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs). You cannot have one without the other.
The plan is to replace your government-issued ID with a Digital ID, but it’s not just a card in your phone. It is fundamentally built upon your immutable biometrics: your fingerprints, the precise structure of your face, the unique pattern of your iris. This biometric data is the key. It is the hard link that ties your physical body directly to your digital identity…

Check out the Social Credit System in China.
Its all fun and games until your social credit score doesn’t allow you to buy food.

Should you commit a minor infraction; such as jaywalking; the nation’s omnipresent facial recognition apparatus instantaneously identifies you, publicly projects your image on a digital billboard of societal disgrace, and deducts the corresponding fine directly from your digital wallet with surgical precision.

  13. It’s not a bad idea tbh. As sad as it is I would trust Starmer over any Ni politician in power

  14. I mean, most EU countries have something LIKE this…she should maybe elaborate or be quiet

  15. Even better craic that they are calling it a ‘brit card’

  16. She’s correct. The GFA makes it abundantly clear there is no room for extra conditions on the rights of Irish people born/living in the north or on their identities.

Goes beyond identity as well. The UK has already been going extremely authoritarian. What happens if the govt decides to cut someones Digital ID off because they don’t like their views, can’t work, can’t live.

It is beyond time we get out of the sinking ship that is the UK.

  17. What a load of shit

Digital ID cards are no more friggin onerous than having a passport.

One thing that people CLEARLY want, is an end to illegal immigration, welfare fraud, NHS misuse – those all exist because some idiots seem to think be able to identify yourself (which they happily do all day long to get a bank account, or buy a house, or buy a car or even get a friggin library card) is an attack on their civil liberties.

    Eff off.

  18. Ignoring the British part of it because all this will lead to is making it okay for people to be questioned for their ID at any point (which will be 99% POC) basically ICE but less extreme.

  19. Will Irish,Welsh and Scottish citizens working and living in the UK be required to carry this?

  20. How is this an attack on the good Friday agreement (im slow)

  21. They have all your essential cards on your phone in Poland, seems like a good idea but I see how one government and not the other having a mandatory ID think might mess with the whole GFA

  22. Don’t tend to agree with Shinners, but the Sneaky-Tory in No. 10 is out of line!

  23. You’re kidding yourself if you don’t think a digital ID card already exists for you.

  24. It’s the dumbest name for anything since Preserved Fish’s parents had to come up with something.

  25. ‘Wer nichts zu verbergen hat, hat auch nichts zu befürchten’
