Visited the Sir David Stirling memorial today, not far from his family home in Dunblane.

For anyone who’s been watching SAS Heroes or knows his story, I highly recommend making the trip, it’s a powerful site and a fitting tribute to one of the greats and the many SAS who have fought and died for us.

Unfortunately, the council doesn’t light it up at night anymore, which is a real shame. He did so much for the country. It deserves to be seen, even after dark.

Still, the lack of lighting made for a striking shot of the man himself.

  1. It’s a lovely little place, and the view from there is great.

  2. Nice shot – watched Rogue Heroes glad to see Scottish accent represented with Bill Fraser as they went upper RP with the Stirling brothers (they were posh but you would expect a bit of hint) – reminds me of the portrayal of Greenock born Alastair Denniston in The Imitation Game who recruited Turing (who was descended from the Turing Baronets of Foveran, Aberdeen and whose namesake goes way back in Scottish history to Sir William Turing who supported David II) didnt expect Turing to have an accent but did expect Alastair

Also worth noting too Robert Blair Mayne paternal side were Ulster Scots however its not clear what part of Scotland they were originally from – the surname Mayne itself could be derived from Gaelic form of Menzies = Meinn or Meine in Normandy despite the Gaelic derivation both possibilities could indicate Norman origin – not the first Ulster Scot with Norman origins if we consider Sam Houston whos origins likely trace back to Hugh de Padinan who owned land in Renfrewshire including Houston (Hughs town)

If we also include Robert Watson-Watt with the invention of radar – we have some of the key personnel here involved in turning the tide of WW2 many either born in Scotland or with Scottish roots
