HIV-prevention drug to be available for $40 a year from 2027 • FRANCE 24 English

It’s been hailed as a groundbreaking HIV prevention drug and soon it will be available for just $40 a year. Generic versions of Len Capavir, a twice yearly injection will be sold in more than 100 countries from 2027. This after unitade and the Gates Foundation made deals with Indian pharmaceutical companies to produce the cheaper versions. By driving prices down and securing sustainable supply, generics will make six monthly prep a real choice for the millions of people in great need in low and middle inome countries. Lena Capavilla has been proven to reduce the risk of HIV transmission by more than 99.9%. Marketed under the brand name Yesgo by California-based Gilead Sciences, it currently costs around $28,000 a year in the United States. a price which some experts say has hindered the effort to curb the HIV epidemic. Cheaper alternatives could represent a turning point. Now with this product, we can end HIV. We can really have a a a bite in the curve of the epidemic and end HIV. And it is within our side, but we have to see the investments now. Since 2010, global efforts have helped slash the number of new HIV infections by 40%. But UN AIDS data still shows 1.3 million people contracted HIV in 2024.

Infectious disease experts have hailed a move that will see a highly effective HIV prevention drug be sold at just 40 dollars a year in low and middle income countries. Deals with Indian drug manufacturers will see generic versions of the highly effective lenacapavir rolled out in 120 countries as of 2027. Experts hope the wider accessibility of the drug will mean reducing the curb of the HIV epidemic. Story by Carys Garland.

  1. $40 a year not here in America they gonna charge about 4000 a year I bet. My steak should have finished the whole story, I gave America too much credit 28,000.

  2. Maybe one day the United States will have a government that is, "Of the People, By the People, and For the People." Until then, the robber barons will keep on getting rich as they fill the graveyards with the ones made poor.
