USA: Republicans cancel talks meant to avoid US government shutdown • FRANCE 24 English

The federal government will shut down on October 1st unless Congress can pass a stop gap measure to keep it funded. With the clock ticking down, Republicans and Democrats are playing the blame game with both sides at an impass. On Friday, Donald Trump accused Democrats of wanting it to happen. These people are crazy, the Democrats. So, if it has to shut down, it’ll have to shut down. But they’re the ones that are shutting down. Democrats say it’s the Republicans who aren’t serious about finding a solution. On Wednesday, the president cancelled a meeting with Democratic leaders to discuss a possible funding deal, saying a sitdown would be unproductive. A move that has infuriated Democrats. We’re going to continue to four days away from a government shutdown and Republicans are on vacation. Democrats are here in the Capitol ready, willing, and able to sit down with anyone at any time and at any place in order to find a bipartisan path forward to fund the government, avoid a reckless Republican shutdown. Trump and congressional Democrats are locked in a stalemate over the Republicans funding plan. The GOP wants to pass it as is, while the Democrats say any deal must include an extension of subsidies that will prevent skyrocketing premium costs for Americans who use the Affordable Care Act, health insurance. Democrats also want a roll back of Medicaid cuts made in Trump’s one big beautiful bill act. If the government shuts down, hundreds of thousands of federal employees could be left without a paycheck, but some could find themselves out of a job. This time around, the White House’s Office of Management and Budget is telling agencies to prepare plans for mass firings if no spending measure is passed.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said President Donald Trump and the Republican Party are “marching the country” into a government shutdown over their refusal to meet with Democrats and strike a deal to save health care funding from cuts. This shutdown, not the nation’s first, could be more difficult. Trump’s budget office this week ordered federal agencies to prepare a mass firing of federal workers, rather than the typical temporary employee furlough, if the federal government were to close. Also a reminder that this administration just 3 days ago, had to rehire hundreds of federal workers that were laid off by DOGE, and got paid for a nice 7 month vacation! A 5 year child could govern Murica better!
