A sea of people stretching as far as the eye can see. Tens of thousands packed into India’s southern Kurau district Saturday for a campaign rally for actor turned politician VJ. What began as a show of unity quickly turned to tragedy. The crush began when crowds surged towards VJ’s bus. Some fell, sparking the deadly stampede. Those injured now in a stable condition. My brother’s two children were there. The eldest one passed away. The younger one is missing. My sister-in-law is in the ICU. What should I do? A child has lost his eye. VJ is one of Tamil cinema’s most adored actors. He has drawn massive crowds since launching his political party last year, challenging both the state ruling party and Prime Minister Narendra Mod’s own party ahead of elections in early 2026. The prime minister has called the tragedy deeply saddening. My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones, wishing strength to them in this difficult time. District officials have ordered an investigation and promised a compensation of 1 million rupees for the victim’s families. doing
A stampede at a rally for a popular Indian actor and politician in the southern state of Tamil Nadu killed at least 36 people and injured 40 others, the state’s health minister said late Saturday. The rally, which officials say was attended by tens of thousands of people, was being addressed by Vijay, one of Tamil Nadu’s most successful actors-turned-politician in the district of Karur.
