They came to peel, cut, and fry in a heated competition at the World French Fries Championships. Dozens of candidates from all over the world came to put their recipes to the test. The Belgians were determined to defend their country’s culinary reputation. Yes, we are very serious. We’re in 100%. Among the 50,000 attendees, Belgians showed up in large numbers. However, in the first two years of the championships, the French took home the biggest prize for fries without toppings. This year, fry chef Yamashita Kok came all the way from Tokyo to take part in the authentic fries competition. First time to do this like this in in timely manner. So, it’s a different a lot of pressure. Yes, lot of pressure. Time and pressure. It’s good. I do my best. very I very prestigious honor to be here. The 90minute challenge was overseen by a professional jury. There are potatoes, fat, salt, and that’s it. That’s how you can tell if the fries are good without sauce, without steak, without all that stuff. Without all that stuff, the jury can focus on what really matters.

The World French Fry Championships was held for the third year in a row in the northern French city of Arras. Siem Bruggen of the Netherlands won the first prize for Authentic Fries – or fries without any toppings. Story by Florent Marchais and France Télévisions.

  1. Are you sure this was a french fry championship & not a chips competition? But the sign I saw said "Holland fries" not French fries & I thot the pictures showed like British chips, thicker than American french fries.
