West don’t have any reasoning, when west say it need put Putin on negotiation table it means they want Russia to surrender while Russia is winning, so West need try be less delusional and agreed on terms that winning side want. IMO, the only viable strategies for Russia to achieve their imperialist goals are:
1) Slowly encroach ex-Soviet states, over the course of decades. Small skirmishes here and there.
2) Infiltrate their governments, by winning elections and planting pro-Russian puppets.
That’s about it. I can’t see how Russia would come out as victors in a old-fashion WW2-esque battle where they go all-inn, and invade the whole western front, and end up annexing all the old countries in one swoop. It would mean a direct war with NATO – and even if USA were to call it quits, the combined European force + Ukraine would be too much.
I’m actually kind of surprised that they did the full-scale invasion, which turned out to be the blunder of a lifetime. If they really wanted Ukraine, they should have just continued with their election meddling. Kind of difficult to state just how big of a blunder it was.
I just don’t understand how Russia who can’t even occupy more than a section of a much smaller and weaker country is somehow going to roll into the Baltics and Poland and pillage them?
Poland’s military is much more dangerous than Ukraine. The Russians don’t even have the manpower to take cities in Ukraine. Where are they going to magically get millions of men to invade Europe from?
Putin knows he can’t win in Ukraine and it will cost him everything if he holds course. Provoking a conflict that Russia has no possibility of winning against NATO is his out. Putin sold the Ukraine war as a winnable conflict to the Russian people. If he can get a military engagement out of Nato, he can use enough plausible deniability from within the Russian state-media to convice the general public the US and NATO are the aggressors against the righteous Russian people and from there use that stance to stagnate the lines or withdraw completely.
The assembling of all the generals by Pete Hegeseth recently could very well be about war with Russia.

Putin has been on a fundamentally unreasonable course since the moment those paratroopers of his got shredded by artillery at the Hostomel airport, everything he’s done since then was doubling down on perpetuating a farce meant to convince his domestic audience that a catastrophically ill-advised war is going according to the plan.
The world is already at war… its just a matter of when it wants to admit it.
