While Pantex had long been considered by the Department of Energy to be a “relatively clean and safe facility,” the Government Accountability Office noted in 1991 that safety and health concerns had cropped up over the previous few years. Contaminants were present at the plant, from neuropathy-causing chemicals used to clean up accidents to radioactive materials used in weapons, such as uranium, tritium, and plutonium, and also beryllium, a carcinogenic metal used in tools and weapons that could be released as dust and inhaled.
