Average vehicle age in USA by congressional district [OC]

  1. Mind sharing your methodology of how you aggregated census data to the congregational district level? As I understand it, census data is already an average age, so are you averaging averages or creating a weighted average? This could be a possible pitfall in your data.

  2. Pretty cool! Montana (my home state) looks like it has way older cars on average, but I would bet that’s because we have antique tags that don’t need renewals and no sales tax; so people from other states come here to register their classic cars.

  3. I’m going to point out that this map strongly resembles the map of locations that have summer grade fuel (and in many cases, emissions testing). Emissions testing could force older cars off the road bringing the average age of the fleet in that area down. Furthermore, this could drive the average age of used cars in adjacent areas down.

… and also as noted /r/PeopleLiveInCities (which also is related to the emissions testing).

  4. Proud member of the dark red category here! The avg age of my registered/insured vehicles is 22

  5. I’m convinced the heat and humidity in Houston just cooks cars. Plus, we do a ton of driving. But having said that, my car is 10 years old and my husband’s is 16 years old. But we have pretty short commutes compared to a lot of Houstonians.

  6. Other than income, I’d be curious to see how this correlates with humidity levels. MA has high humidity summers and salty roads all winter which leads to so much rust in our cars.

  7. I think part of the explanation for the Northeast is that the weather up here kills cars. We get hot humid summers and cold snowy winters, and there’s a lot of road salt.

I suspect that vehicle inspection requirements have a lot to do with it also.

  8. Does “vehicles” include farm equipment or does it focus more on personal vehicles?

  9. As someone in an 8.0-8.9 county, this blows my mind! I can’t imagine the average car being a 2005 model!

  10. Correlating this to states that have regular inspection requirements would be interesting.

  11. We need to know more about the methodology. Is this by vehicle registration, is this inclusive of fleet vehicles like rental agencies which register cars in a handful of states regardless of where they are actually rented. Is this inclusive of work vehicles etc etc … There is a lot of segments of the Automotive market that really should be clarified to use for any analysis.

  12. So major cities, New York, and Texas replace their cars relatively often.

I’m really curious what makes Texas and New York stand out at the state level.

  13. I’d be curious to see if there is a relationship between this data and the number of cars versus trucks to see if, for example, truck owners are keeping their vehicles longer. Given their added cost and the durability of diesel engines, it seems common to see a lot higher mileage trucks than cars.

  14. So many of these maps seem to hit my form of color-blindness right on the nose.

  15. Need to update Montana to two congressional districts, but the point stands

  16. We drive 10+ yr old vehicles & have Permanent registrations. Older well-kept vehicles are cheaper to own, insure, and maintain, especially when there’s no car payment.

The new vehicle market is collapsing around the country, deservedly so. Prices are asinine, and it’s a predatory industry/racket that wants to get people locked into debt with financing ‘incentives’.

  17. I love old cars but I hate polluting cars (that’s why I’m converting my ’62 Mercury to electric, it’s not easy or cheap though)

  18. I know this would be hard to get, but I’d love to see age of newest car in the household.

How much of this is driven by people in rural areas holding onto old cars after getting new ones?

  19. This is basically a map of places where road salt is used.

  20. Interesting g how sf and nyc are so different in representation

  21. The color coding is not working for me. Maybe gradations of a prism cluster would be clearer. Or just start with fewer categories and use one gradated color.

  22. I would love to see an overlay of EV and truck registrations.

  23. Weird how the most economically prosperous areas have the newest cars
