At least four dead in shooting and fire at Mormon church in Michigan • FRANCE 24 English

5 on Sunday morning when a gunman rammed a vehicle into a Mormon church in Michigan and opened fire on worshippers with an assault rifle before setting the building al light. Police arrived promptly on the scene and killed the suspect after a shootout in the church car park, but not before several worshippers had been killed. We’re working tirelessly to uh find additional bodies. So, to answer your question, the entire church has not been cleared because it’s a total loss due to the fire. So, these first responders right now, they’re in recovery mode. They’re trying to fight through all the debris uh from the fire. So, um no, we have not cleared the entire church just yet. Police have named the suspect as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford. US media reported him as having grown up nearby and being a military veteran. Police searched his home in the neighboring town of Burton later on Sunday. The shooting took place at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blank, a small community of roughly 8,000 people about an hour north of Detroit. Hundreds are believed to have been inside the church for Sunday service at the time of the shooting. For now, the motive remains unclear. Local authorities say they’re working with the FBI to uncover more details about the suspect. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer condemned the shooting as did President Donald Trump who called it a targeted attack on Christians in America. It came on a particularly violent weekend in the United States where mass shootings also occurred in North Carolina, Texas, and New Orleans.
