  1. RTW was a complete disaster. Corporate agenda dressed up as “freedom”.

  2. Weird how union membership is connected to higher gdp and median income.

It’s almost like unions are good for the economy.

  3. The divide between poor, dumb & angry and “blue collar”.

  4. “We have RTW here. We treat you like family–with neglect and abuse.”

  5. Some states don’t have many organizations with unions. Lotta small and self-owned businesses.

  6. Teacher, in a state where teachers unions are illegal.

I’d join a union so fast it would make administrators’ heads spin. I’d pay dues for someone else if it meant we had a union.

  7. I wish American unions were a little less rent seeking and little more adaptable to the modern environment.

Public sector unions are a joke (sorry, I know this one gets people mad) and you got trades unions in the US that operate like mafias (won’t work on Comcast’s new headquarters unless we’re able to outfit it with a whole water piping system; can’t work with prefab construction because it reduces union work despite also reducing prices for end consumers).

American unions just suck compared with other unions in Europe.

  8. kinda surprised that Hawaii and New York are the highest.

  9. Darker colors are often used with higher concentrations rather than lower. It’s a little hard to adjust to

  10. How much of the westcoast is from teachers, county/city employees, etc? There’s a ton of government workers here in CA, and they’ve all got unions. UFCW is pretty strong too (my 20yo kid had to join the union to work at the grocery store). Healthcare workers too, but I suspect that might be nationwide.

  11. It would be nice to see average salaries overlaid or in another panel.

  12. This is very surprising, especially since my perception of coastal economies was that they were more service-based as opposed to blue-collar. And from what I understand, unions went away with out transition to a white-collar economy. If anything, I would expect this map to be inverted.

  13. The scale was accidentally made backwards. The high-intensity color got used for low values instead of high values. Oops, that happens, but worth a fix

  14. Unions and worker militancy are antithetical to profits and capitalism, so of course the government worked hand in hand with corporations to destroy as much labor power that they could.

  15. Scott walker destroyed unions in Wisconsin and it has yet to recover them.

  16. These are rookie numbers, we gotta bump those numbers up

  17. Republican policy is pretty good at being anti-Union

  18. What a terrible color scheme. Two oranges look identical to me.
