Wish there was a pic of all three of the last male consorts (Henrik, Philip, and Claus) together. While many refer to Philip and Henrik as prince consorts only Henrik was styled as a prince consort/had a specific title denoting his position as consort. He was styled HRH The Prince of Denmark when his wife ascended the throne (not picked up on by English sources which continued to refer to him as HRH Prince Henrik) which was changed to HRH The Prince Consort of Denmark in 2005 when he felt that simply being HRH The Prince didn’t make his position as consort clear enough. When he retired from duties in 2016 he reverted to HRH Prince Henrik of Denmark which was the title he held between his marriage and his wife’s ascension. On the other hand Philip held the title of a younger son of a monarch (HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh) and wasn’t even made a prince of the UK (only an HRH) until five years after his wife ascended the throne. Only Albert has been styled HRH The Prince Consort in the UK. In the Netherlands (the other last country to have had a male consort) the title for prince consorts is HRH The Prince of the Netherlands.

Hopefully the husbands of the young future European queens regnant will emulate the good aspects of the previous male consorts while making sure to not make the mistakes they made. There will eventually be many male consorts in Europe starting with Daniel who is a great role model for the husbands of the young future queens regnant (so is Prince Lorenz of Belgium despite him never being an actual first gentleman). I am sure we will get many nice group pictures of them. Hopefully at least some countries will equalize consort titles so that there aren’t seven queens and only two kings and when there are more reigning queens than reigning kings there’s no point in pretending that male leaders outrank female ones just by being male.

  1. Male consorts have to understand their supporting role.

As was it pointed out in the Crown series

    “The Queen is the duty”

  2. Hopefully someone will do away with all this silliness — and soon.
