The Danish armed forces have urgently summoned reservists to service in response to a growing drone threat in the country’s airspace. The information about the sudden call-up was revealed by Danish TV.

Security expert Jacob Kaarsbo, who previously served as chief analyst at the Danish Military Intelligence Service, emphasizes that such calls are extremely rare. He noted that the developments show Denmark is facing a completely exceptional situation. He continued, saying that extraordinary measures are implemented, that had not been used in the past.

According to TV 2, the purpose of the call-up is to prepare reservists for a possible operation on Danish territory. The decision may also be related to the upcoming European Union summit, which will take place in Copenhagen this week.

Danish Ministry of Defence declined to comment on the sudden call-up, referring inquiries to the Armed Forces Command, which also did not respond to TV 2’s attempts to make contact.

The chairman of the Hovedorganisationen for Personel af Reserven in Denmark, Jesper Schneider, would not disclose the date of the last sudden call-up of reservists. He stressed, however, that reservists are regularly called up both for training and for operational tasks.

Schneider said there is a growing requirement for the reservists to engage in service, and thus support the regular forces. He refused to comment on whether this necessity has been growing in the present circumstances, but he also said that drawing on additional resources shall not be viewed as unusual.

The organisation’s head points out that the current situation is a good example of the importance of having a well-prepared reserve. He concluded that a large portion of the personnel has a contract guaranteeing readiness for service, also adding that these are situations in which having a large and capable reserve is key.
