US government shutdown looms after no deal was reached between Trump and congressional leaders
Congressional Democrats emerged from a meeting with Donald Trump on Monday with no deal yet to avoid a government shutdown. For the first time, the president heard our objections and heard why we needed a bipartisan bill. Their bill has not one iota of Democratic input. That is never how we’ve done this before. When I was leader, we negotiated four times with Republicans and we never had a shutdown. The Republicans need 60% of the Senate to push the budget through, but Democrats are demanding healthc care provisions, including the reversing of cuts to Medicaid. The Trump administration accuses the Democrats of engaging in brinksmanship. Senate disagreements about tax policy, but you don’t shut that government down. We have disagreements about healthcare policy, but you don’t shut the government down. You don’t use your policy disagreements as leverage to not pay our troops, to not have essential services of government actually function. You don’t say the fact that you disagree about a particular tax provision is an excuse for shutting down the people’s government and all the essential services that come along with it. Confrontations over budgets are common in US politics. Republicans, while in opposition, have themselves regularly threatened shutdowns to extract concessions from Democratic administrations. JD Vance advocated such a threat last September as a vice presidential candidate. A shutdown would mean many public services only partially operating and national parks and public museums closing. A 35-day shutdown in December 2018 and January 2019 cost the US $3 billion in economic growth. Things are further complicated by the Trump administration’s filiting of the federal government with several thousand government employees set to end work on September 30th under deferred resignation programs.
The United States government was heading toward a shutdown on Tuesday, with funding expiring at midnight and Democrats and Republicans digging in on their respective demands. Story by Oliver Farry.
