They shouldn’t give them the free argument that they are hated and disrespected. They’ll use this to say “everyone is against us”, “we are just as democratically elected, THEY disrespect YOUR vote.”
You want to keep the good manners and the courtesy, because breaking it gives your opponent a narrative win (even if it was limited to their current bases). You want to get that win, not gift it. Older politicians argued against (and some for) real authoritarian fascism and communism so they DO get it.
Younger politicians don’t get it, because they think only to perform to their own bases and not how you perform to your rival’s (who are those you’re trying to convince so they change their vote). That is why we get polarisation, performing to “own” your opponent and dissing their stupid voters who “can’t fathom their hypocrisy.” You don’t win arguments shouting “Nazi” or refusing to shake a hand; you lose the audience.
All who don’t get this should listen to people like Bernie Sanders or Pepe Mujica talking to their rival’s bases, and understand how a public serviceman and a gentleman should do politics.
