LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — Volunteers gathered in downtown La Crosse Wednesday afternoon to participate in the “Higher Standards Community Clean-Up Day,” collecting litter throughout the city’s central business district.

The event, hosted by Downtown Main Street, ran from 3 to 6 p.m. with volunteers checking in at Larson’s General to receive supplies before spreading throughout downtown to collect debris.

These cleanups are extremely important for downtown,” said Kathleen Graham, community engagement director for Downtown Main Street. “Downtown is the heartbeat of our city, and keeping it clean, safe, attractive, and vibrant is crucial not only for the downtown area but also for all the surrounding areas: the small businesses, families, and residents who call this place home.”

Participants received complimentary treats from local businesses after returning their filled bags to designated stations. Adults received items from Sensi, while all ages received ice cream from The Pearl Ice Cream Parlor & Confectionery.

The cleanup was powered by Sensi and local green retailers in partnership with the La Crosse City Vision Foundation, Kroger & Sons and The UPS Store downtown.
