The chief executive of Maybank in Singapore says Donald Trump’s trade war with south-east Asia has accelerated a pivot away from the US by the economic bloc towards China.

Alvin Lee, the CEO of the lender’s Singapore operations, suggests the hefty tariffs levied against countries in the region has caused them to look inward in terms of trade, with China becoming an increasingly important economic partner.
