California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has unveiled his own trolling campaign against members of President Donald Trump’s administration — and some in MAGA world are claiming hypocrisy.
Trump has shared several deepfake videos of House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) on social media since late Monday, hours after meeting with the two Democratic leaders to negotiate a spending deal ahead of the current government shutdown.
In one video, Jeffries is wearing a sombrero and a fake mustache alongside Schumer, who says in a fabricated voice that Democrats “have no voters anymore, because of our woke, trans bulls—.”
“If we give all these illegal aliens health care, we might be able to get them on our side so they can vote for us,” the fake voice of Schumer said, referring to a misleading claim amplified by Republican leaders and lawmakers that Democrats shut down the government to give free health care to illegal immigrants.
Newsom, appearing to play off of Trump’s videos, has taken particular aim at Vice President JD Vance, House Speaker Mike Johnson and the president on X.
“PSA from JD,” Newsom wrote in one post on Wednesday, transforming Vance into a minion from the movie franchise “Despicable Me” with a yellow complexion, goggles and a high-pitched voice.
Kyle Mann, the editor-in-chief of the satirical news site The Babylon Bee, replied that Newsom should be “thankful” that his platform sued California over laws that prohibit some deepfake images and videos parodying politicians.
One user wrote “Incredible,” attaching a past post from Newsom, in which he says: “Manipulating a voice in an ‘ad’ like this one should be illegal. I’ll be signing a bill in a matter of weeks to make sure it is.” Newsom was responding to tech billionaire Elon Musk sharing an AI-altered video mimicking a campaign ad from former Vice President Kamala Harris.
“When the governor of California finds out about this video, he will be very mad…,” the “Libs of TikTok” account said of the same post.
In another post from Wednesday, Newsom also turned Johnson into a minion, writing in a caption, “Trump’s Minion Mike lies to the American people.” Johnson, in the clip, was speaking with ABC host George Stephanopoulos, who pressed the GOP leader on why he opposes the Democratic proposal to avert a government shutdown, which he said is “designed to prevent millions of Americans from losing their health insurance, losing Medicaid coverage or paying higher health care premiums.”
“No George,” Johnson replies with a helium-inducted voice, telling viewers to “review the facts for themselves.” During the actual interview, Johnson called Stephanopoulos’ statement “absurd.”
On Tuesday, Newsom posted a video of Vance with long curly hair and chubby face to pop star Lady Gaga’s “Just Dance.”
“JD ‘JUST DANCE’ VANCE, YOU’VE BEEN BOOTED BY PETE!” he wrote, after Hegseth announced new grooming standards during a rare meeting with hundreds of top military officials earlier this week.
