When I was 12 my mother warned me to pay attention to a shelf which had still to be fixed, she told me to not lean on it and if I were to injure myself with it she would slap me.
Naturally I did mess with the shelf that crushed down on my toe, a loud noise roared from upstairs and she rushed to my room asking me what was happening. I tried to reassure her everything was fine and she didn’t need to come and check but since I was in pain my voice betrayed my attempt at obfuscation. She opened the door and saw me holding my toe, she screamed at me but didn’t spank me, ordering to collect myself and put the shelf back in its place.
A week later out of the blue she slapped me and then uttered “pacta servanda sunt”, that’s Latin for _pacts must be upheld_, it didn’t hurt but I was extremely annoyed by it.
We still joke about it sometimes 🤣.
