Spain: Valencia on alert for heavy rains and flooding • FRANCE 24 English
Perched on top of her car, this motorist waits for help while another is trapped inside their vehicle. In Sarraosa Province, the torrential rain swept cars away like they were mere toys. And as the water rose, memories resurfaced of last year’s fatal floods. Several regions in northeastern Spain were kept on high alert Monday because of the risk of torrential rain and a violent storm that blocked roads. There’s a tree trunk in front of me. It fell on me. I went out to run an errand and now I can’t leave. Residents of Sarraosa have been trying to clear the drains as best they can. This is what happens to us every year when it rains. The drains are out of order. Water is pouring down from above and no one is doing anything about it. This is the third time this has happened to our house and the house next door. Elsewhere in the region, the small town of Castayot was also hit by torrents of water which in some places burst brick walls. Valencia meanwhile closed all public spaces and most schools on Monday after the weather agency kept coastal areas under the highest red alert. More than 200 people lost their lives in last year’s flash floods, which sparked public anger over the warning systems and emergency response. Residents of the region have been urged to exercise extreme caution in the hope that history will not repeat itself.
Spain’s national weather agency lowered its rain alert level for the eastern region of Valencia on Tuesday, a day after downpours sparked fears of a repeat of last year’s deadly floods. more than half a million students in Valencia had no lessons on Monday because 243 local councils in the region closed their schools as a precaution.
