‘The Sault’s Largest Rock Band’ came alive as about 20 local musicians gathered to perform a single iconic Canadian anthem by Bachman – Turner Overdrive
A group of approximately 20 local musicians came together to perform Bachman – Turner Overdrive’s Takin’ Care Of Business at the Downtown Plaza Saturday.
The performance – billed as The Sault’s Largest Rock Band – came about after Josh Ingram, City of Sault Ste. Marie Downtown Plaza supervisor, saw a YouTube video where a thousand musicians got together to play Learn to Fly by the Foo Fighters.
The brief local concert, including musicians from a wide range of ages, began at 2:30 p.m. with Robert Peace and Elly McWatters as lead vocalists.
After a drum solo the group of musicians gave an encore performance of Takin’ Care Of Business before disbanding for the afternoon.
The show attracted a small but enthusiastic audience.
“I think it’s an awesome turnout of musicians for year one and we just hope that this might start catching fire. Maybe we’ll have an annual tradition that’ll take off from here. Maybe we’ll add 10 musicians every year,” Ingram told SooToday.
The concert was coordinated with Long & McQuade, Case’s Music and the Algoma Conservatory of Music.
One reason Takin’ Care of Business was chosen as the show’s lone song is because one of Bachman – Turner Overdrive’s members – Mick Dalla-Vee – is originally from the Sault, Ingram said.
It was also a show of patriotism.
“We just kind of started talking about ‘what song do we play?’ We said ‘let’s pick a Canadian band and a Canadian song.’ It’s something that feels like a second anthem and something that people want to sing along with to enjoy our downtown,” Ingram said.
