UN votes to authorize 5,550-member international Haiti force • FRANCE 24 English
A military force of up to 5,500 uniformed personnel, including police officers and soldiers, could be deployed to fight gang violence in Haiti. The UN Security Council approved this force, which will have the power to neutralize, isolate, and deter gangs. It is also authorized to secure infrastructure, including the airport, schools, hospitals, and ports. The adoption of this resolution offers Haiti hope. It is a hope that has been rapidly slipping away as terrorist gangs expanded their territory, raped, pillaged, murdered, and terrorized the Haitian population. This resolution will transform a Kenyan-led international security mission which has been operating in the Caribbean country for the last 15 months. It has faced numerous challenges including staffing, logistics, and underfunding. nor has it been able to keep up with the dramatic expansion of gangs. Around 85% of Haiti’s capital, Porto France, is under the control of these heavily armed groups. The violence has left more than a million people displaced and institutions have collapsed. It’s unclear how this new force will overcome these difficulties. Kitty’s permanent representative to the UN expressed gratitude for this expansion, but acknowledge it will be tough. The reality on the ground has reminded us that the scale and sophistication of the threats far exceeds the mandate initially granted to this mission. Not to mention the considerable lack of funding. We will remain forever grateful to our Kenyan brothers for the sacrifices that they made. Not everyone on the UN Security Council is on board with the resolution. Russia and China were both critical and abstain from the vote along with Pakistan. Beijing said it could exacerbate the situation, while Moscow argued that this mission was unlikely to produce sustainable results.
The UN Security Council voted Tuesday to authorize a mer, 5,550-member international unit with expanded powers to help stop escalating gang violence in Haiti. The resolution, co-sponsored by the United States and Panama, will transform the current Kenya-led multinational force into a “Gang Suppression Force” with the power to arrest suspected gang members, which the current force does not have.
