Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg today led a PN delegation to a meeting with members of the Malta ESG Alliance, the PN said in a statement.

The MESGA is a platform for Maltese businesses to work together to achieve ESG goals so that enterprises, businesses, and even the public sector in our country uphold high standards for the protection of the environment, people’s quality of life, and ethical and honest governance.

Several MESGA members representing different sectors – including banking, logistics, tourism, and others – made interventions on how their respective fields can contribute towards higher national standards.

Alex Borg noted that in 2022, ESG featured in the PN’s electoral manifesto – a forward-looking manifesto – and today, with the strong support of MESGA and of companies and enterprises that want to see a better and more efficient country, the PN wants to continue shaping policy for the future.

Addressing those present at this meeting, held at the PN Headquarters, Borg said he wants the vision presented by those participating in the meeting to be reflected in the PN’s own vision, so that together we are prepared for the future.

Among other things, he spoke about the importance of placing sustainability on the national agenda. He said that a policy of sustainability ensures that we protect future generations.

Alex Borg spoke about the policies the PN intends to implement, including the establishment of a Logistics Hub for companies, to increase transport efficiency and reduce traffic and emissions. He mentioned the need for a mass transport system that is agreed upon between the parties as a project to be continued from one administration to the next.

The Partit Nazzjonalista continues to believe in the need to improve the country’s infrastructure if we truly want to show that we are aiming for quality tourism.

Long-term planning is required, and what the Malta ESG Alliance has done – successfully bringing together so many members focused on an ideology that favours both the environment and business – paves the way for visions on which we can build.

The concept of ESG is one that aims to raise standards in every area in which it is implemented. For this reason, the public sector and government entities must be at the forefront in adopting it and leading by example.

MESGA speakers explained that within the organisation they have a Students’ Council – a consultative council made up of 11 young people. These youths hold alliance members accountable and demand answers and solutions.

David Xuereb, Chairperson of the Alliance, said that the support of the Partit Nazzjonalista is crucial for more businesses and enterprises to begin aiming for higher ESG standards. He stated that, despite the work MESGA has already done, political support remains very important.

Among the concerns raised by Alliance members was the lack of certainty surrounding environmental regulation. They also stated that it is important for ESG requirements to be included in the Public Procurement process.

Both sides agreed that more meetings like this are needed to discuss, in greater depth, the long-term vision for a more modern country – and, even more importantly, what type of policy should be implemented to make this vision a reality.
