At least five postal workers are injured every week on Australia’s roads. Australia Post has released dashcam footage showing the frequency with which postal workers are hit by distracted drivers. More than 280 posties have been injured in the last year, with many needing hospital treatment and time off work, while some are suffering psychological trauma. New data shows that the postal service’s slightly larger electric delivery vehicles [eDVs] provide more protection than motorcycles, with Australia Post saying it will move to speed up the replacement of its motorcycle fleet with eDVs. Australia Post’s general manager of safety, Russell Munro, said the corporation will take measures to protect its workforce but called out ‘unsafe driver behaviour’ that is putting posties at risk.
