    I know LePen has even stronger anti-NATO rhetoric than Trump but I don’t know if she is the norm on that issue among the far right.

  14. Phase 0 sounds like the whole Russian history so far. They are still in the phase of “we need more teritory” and can’t seem to grow out of it.

  15. The foundation of the modern russian federation is built on corruption, lies and bluffs. Not a very stable foundation if you ask me. I’m not saying they can’t pull off even small things, they are actually doing a decent job with their hybrid warfare.
    But that’s at least in part because some people cant be bothered to do fact checking and the response of european countries to these events (and the entire war) has been half-hearted at best due to the EU being staffed by spineless and naive bureaucrats. In times of peace the politicians may be the best fit for governing, but we are not at peace with russia.

    I do think russia could take a limited piece of territory, such as a town or city in the Baltics. But I doubt they can do any more. Their economy is tanking, even more so due to Ukraine’s strikes on their oil refineries and now also thermal power plants. It will be interesting to see what will happen in Putin’s tsardom come winter.

  18. I don’t want to be too negative, but the destabilisation of smaller countries is quite real and maybe even beyond Phase 0 (what a silly way of scaling things, but okay). And that’s what Russia needs right now – to buy time and to bring chaos wherever they can. It’s textbook KGB and it is enough for them for now. Because they obviously can’t afford to attack NATO, but in ~5 years they might and then the hybrid attacks will have devastating consequences.

  26. I think I’m starting to understand how Putin thinks. He wants to end the war in Ukraine, but that would be admitting defeat to an interior opponent, because he knows most Russians don’t believe that they are fighting against NATO in Ukraine.

    So, the plan is to start an actual war with NATO, then surrender quickly, and save face by telling the lie (for the next century, probably) that it took an alliance of more than 30 countries, with a combined population of 1 Billion, and a gigantic GDP to stop Russia.

    Europe just wants peace.

    If Russia just stopped their aggression and moved out of Ukraine — Europe and Russia could find peaceful ways towards improving their economies and the lifes of their inhabitants.

    The war on Ukraine is incredibly wasteful. Wasting billions of taxpayer money and wasting millions of lives.

    Russians are smart and resourceful. But the state has failed their people. There is so much common between Europe and Russia. But the longer this war continues, the bigger the divide between Europe and Russia becomes.

    In the long run, where China and USA are the major global powerhouses — Russia needs to find common ground with Europe, if not it will implode or become a vassal state of China.

    Europe might be slow to respond in peaceful times, but Europe will totally crush Russia in a world war. Attacking Europe will become the undoing of Russia as we know it.

  30. As long as NATO troops are in Finland, baltic countries and Poland and there’s a war in Ukraine, they won’t attack. It’s easier for them to open a second or third frontline and finish war with Ukraine sooner rather than risking going into full scale conflict with the entirety of NATO

    All the oligarchy he has created will fight to death to preserve their richness.

    And all the hidden allies he has spread across Europe, and now China too.

    The only thing that can change something is the new riches fear to loose their fortunes.
