‘I’m just dreaming about the hugs and kisses’: Gazans celebrate peace deal

   In the Gaza refugee camp in al-Mawasi, the children began dancing at 2am.

   This was shortly after Donald Trump announced “BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS” on Truth Social, announcing a ceasefire and hostage-release deal between Israel and Hamas, which could help end the two-year war.

   According to Enas Baraka, a mother of five, they had barely stopped by lunchtime, such was the joy at the prospect of peace, the hope of survival.

   She told The Telegraph: “This is a great achievement. We did not expect this war to stop after two years of bombing that did not cease for a moment. Now I can feel comfortable and reassured about my children.”

   And yet, a few miles away, on the al-Rashid coastal road, Israeli tanks fired shells towards Palestinian civilians – an attempt, it seemed, to prevent them returning to Gaza City, which remains under siege.

   Meanwhile, two Israeli soldiers were treated for injuries sustained in an IED blast overnight.

   Such was the picture – a mixture of ecstasy and tension – on the morning Israel and Hamas signed a deal to end the most destructive war in the holy land’s modern history, with the ceasefire set to come into effect on Thursday night.

   The phase one agreement was expected to be ratified by Israel’s cabinet on Thursday afternoon.

   Then comes the tortuous wait for the hostages to come out, which sources suggest could happen on Monday.

   Much could yet go wrong. There were signs during the afternoon of disagreements over the identities of Palestinian prisoners to be released and various accusations of bad faith directed by a senior Hamas member towards Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister.

   Nevertheless, on Thursday, the civilians of Gaza were beginning to accept that, for the first time in two years, they had a viable future.
