Norway vs. Israel match set amid protests and tight security
As the Israeli national football team prepares to face Norway in a World Cup qualifier on Saturday, The Athletic has dubbed the game the “most controversial football match in the world.” Norway has won its last five matches, led by the brilliance of Erling Haaland, who, like many of his fellow Norwegians, is unwilling to play against Israel.
The Norwegian Football Federation announced that it is deeply saddened by the deaths of children in Gaza and plans to donate ticket revenue from the match against Israel to the Palestinian people. Previously, Italy’s coach Gennaro Gattuso also expressed discomfort about playing Israel but said the team had no choice but to compete, warning that withdrawing would result in suspension.
According to Sport Express, the Norwegian government plans to limit attendance to 3,000 spectators to ensure the security of the Israeli team’s delegation. Roads surrounding the Oslo stadium will be closed two hours before kickoff to manage this highly tense political and security situation.
