INDIANAPOLIS (WNDU/AP) – Vice President JD Vance paid a visit to Indiana on Friday to meet with Gov. Mike Braun to discuss redistricting.
In a social media post, Gov. Braun thanked the vice president for the visit and for talking with him about “the importance of ensuring fair representation for every Hoosier.”
“I appreciated the thoughtful discussion about how our state is serving Hoosiers through common-sense and strong leadership,” Gov. Braun said in the post. “I look forward to continuing our partnership to keep Indiana — and America — moving in the right direction.”
Vice President Vance’s visit comes as state GOP legislators weigh a special session for mid-cycle redistricting — a move that has split some members of the party.
Redistricting is typically only done every 10 years, but President Trump has been pushing GOP-led states like Indiana to redraw maps ahead of the 2026 midterm elections to ensure a Republican majority in the U.S. House for the rest of his second term.
Indiana’s current map is 7-2 Republicans, with Democrats holding seats in District 1 (northwest Indiana) and District 7 (central Indiana).
According to our sister station WTHR, Vice President Vance’s visit marked at least the third time he has talked to Indiana Republican lawmakers about the possibility of redistricting.
Gov. Braun told WNDU 16 News Now previously thathe wants legislative leaders to reach a consensusbefore he would consider calling lawmakers back to the Statehouse for a special session to redraw congressional boundaries.
